I see many children with dry, itchy and red skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. These conditions are far worse during the winter as central heating tends to dry out the skin. Herbal medicines, herbal creams and diet can alleviate these conditions.
We eat far too many sugary and processed foods, which form an acid environment in the body, creating inflammation and uncomfortable skin conditions, so homemade nutritious meals are a must.
Omega 6 fatty acids are found in sunflower, rapeseed, and corn oils, promote inflammation and can make skin conditions worse. Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish, linseeds, hemp & flax seed oils, nuts, eggs, butter and organic milk, help lubricate the skin from the inside out, reduce inflammation and assist the recovery from these skin conditions.
I make creams, ointments and herbal infusions for treating these conditions in my herbal practice.
One of the most widely used herbs for this is the common "chickweed". Chickweed cools the skin and reduces itching. It can be dabbed onto the affected areas even for very small babies. The infusion can be added to the child's bath water.
Rose water, and rose extracts are also cooling on the skin, helping to reduce redness and itching. I add rose water to my creams and sometimes to the child's internal medicine.
Marshmallow is another native herb that I use internally and externally for these conditions. Children seem to associate it with the fluffy white and pink sweets you toast on a campfire!
Marshmallow root powder contains "long chain polysaccharides" which feed the friendly bacteria in the bowel. This is great for treating eczema.
I often add marshmallow tincture to my creams, as it is very emollient/softening and helps with very dry scaly skin.
Chamomile is another anti-inflammatory effective skin conditions; the tea also helps to reduce stress and anxiety. You can use the herbal infusion of chamomile in the child's bath to sooth; reduce redness, itching and inflammation.
